Hidden dangers are a part of any workplace. Identifying these dangers and practicing safe work habits will minimize the risks to both you and your customers. The grade nine course will focus on basic sanitation skills including proper hygiene and cleaning methods as well as safe food handling practices such as understanding the food danger zone, cross contamination and general pest control maintenance.

Now that we know how to keep ourselves safe in the kitchen, let's focus our attention on being able to properly measure and combine the right quantity of ingredients in order to prepare products of restaurant quality. Math skills are used constantly in the kitchen. Changing recipe quantities and portion sizes, calculating food costs and ordering product all require an understanding of basic math concepts. The grade nine course will focus on practicing basic recipes changes (doubling/halving a recipe), measurement equivalents, and fractions in cooking.Students will learn how to correctly measure a variety of dry and liquid ingredients and will prepare a variety of food products using the correct tools, equipment and techniques.
