Large Residential Equipment
It is just as important to understand how to use residential equipment safely and effectively as it is to use commercial equipment. There are multiple varieties of each type of residential equipment, far more than I could ever discuss! Read the information below for specific details on the equipment found in our classrooms. Refer to the user manuals for residential equipment used in your own home.
Residential Electric Stove
Residential stoves come in both gas and electric models. The heating elements on the stovetop of an electric oven can either come as single coil elements or can be built into the unit as is the case in the flat top oven design. The number of stovetop elements will vary from model to model. Our flat top residential ovens have 5 heating elements, 2 large, 2 small and 1 warming/melting element. Adjustable knobs on the back of the unit allow the cook to modify heat. Also on the back control panel, you will find the remaining controls for the oven, including light display, timers, cleaning options and oven heat settings.
Our oven use high heat for cleaning providing a convenient way to periodically clean the interior of the oven.
Top and bottom heating elements provide standard heating options such as bake and broil. Optional convection heat mode is available using a fan at the back of the oven interior to circulate air within the cavity of the oven. Convection heat allows for even cooking, and is recommended when baking goods requiring even browning. Be aware, convection heat tends to cook faster and the temperature should be modified by reducing the temperature by 25 degrees.
Note: Avoid excess spillage on the flat top when possible, and never scrape the surface with harsh scouring pads as this will damage the unit. Allow unit to cool completely before cleaning. Use Ceramabrite or another non abrasive cleaner designed for flat tops and the scouring pad provided.

Residential Refrigerator
Residential Fridges provide plenty of room for the average household's cold food storage. Our residential fridge provides fridge space on the top and freezer space below. Crispers bins at the bottom of the fridge provide storage space for fresh fruits and vegetables and should be cleaned frequently. Make sure to check the dates of condiments periodically to ensure that products are used before the expiration dates.
I always recommend storing an open bow of baking soda at the back of the fridge to absorb odours caused by a variety of foods that are stored in close proximity to one another.

Residential Dishwasher
Now don't get too excited, this piece of equipment is rarely used in our hospitality class!!! Residential dishwashers are great to clean the average family's daily dishes, but in the classroom, this piece of equipment is inconvenient due to the length of time it takes to complete the cycle (over one hour).
Periodically we will use this machine if we have a sit down luncheon requiring the use of china and glassware.
Dishwashing soap designed for dishwashers must be used in this machine. Scrape plates of debris before filling the machine.

Residential Washing Machine
Our front door washing machine gets put through a lot of wear and tear with the amount of laundry we do on a daily basis. The front tray used to hold soap, bleach and fabric softener work well for normal use in a residential setting, however can get "gummed up" with residual soap scum if not cleaned frequently.
For our needs, simply place one scoop of detergent directly into the cavity of the machine along with the clothing being washed. Close the door (being careful not to slam the door as it causes it to come out of alignment). Push the right hand knob inwards and twist clockwise until the arrow reaches the normal wash setting. Pull knob out- this will begin the cycle. If for any reason, you need to stop the cycle, you must push the knob back in to release the door lock.

Residential Dryer
Our dryer at school is pretty basic, perfect for drying the aprons, jackets and towels that we use each and every day.
Clean the lint trap after each load so that maximum heat is attained.

Clean the lint trap after each load so that maximum heat is attained.
To Use:
- Turn the left button to high heat.
- Turn the dial on the right hand side to the time setting you think will dry your load. Usually for a full load, I set the timer to 60 minutes.
- Twist the middle control to the right to start the machine.
Residential Freezer
Freezers come in both chest and upright models. Sizes will vary from small apartment sized models, to large models capable of holding large amounts of product.
This chest freezer is usually packed with a variety of soups, meat products, cookies and more. The benefit of having a freezer is that you can purchase items when that are on sale rather than having to pay full price. Make sure that all product is wrapped properly to avoid freezer burn and that foods are labelled and dated so that when frozen, you know what is occupying freezer space.
