Tourism Events and Activities
Tourism Events and Activities
Services, events and activities are each influenced differently by the Tourism Industry. Here are some examples of how each of the five tourism sectors (accommodation, food and beverage services, recreation and entertainment, transportation and travel services), relate to the services, events and activities below.
Youth Hostel
Provide short term, economical lodging to students and other young travelers. Many provide shared accommodation (dormitory style) and facilities (shared bathroom). Hostels are normally centrally located as their guests are dependent on public transportation. Most services that these customers would use would be budget conscious (cheap food options/fast food and entertainment (bars/clubs/movie theatres) etc).
Eco Tourism
Amenities at an eco tourist destination would be conscious of minimizing the affect it has on the environment. Attention to using renewable resources (transportation) and services (hotels) would be paramount for an Eco Tour. Waste would be minimized or diverted (Food and Beverage). Activities would focus on sustainability (Recreation/Attractions)
Weddings
Weddings require the services of many sectors of the tourism industry. Weddings themselves require the services of a limousine (transportation), venue (hotel/conference centre), wedding dinner (food and beverage services), honeymoon (travel services).
Wedding guests may have traveled away from home to attend. They may require additional services such as lodging, meals and transportation. They may use the travel service sector to book their flight and have bought insurance in case of emergency (tourism services). Guest may have come for an extended period and may also want to explore the area and take part in local activities (attractions/adventure and recreation).
Weddings also support peripheral businesses such as beauty parlors, clothing shops, gas stations etc.
Guided Tours
Guided tours can take clients to unknown destinations and locales. Many tours combine more than one sector of the tourism industry. For example, the Niagara region offers self guided bicycle tours (transportation) of local vineyards (attractions) where clients can sample locally produced wines and other types of foods (food and beverages)
Olympics/Pan American Games
International sporting events attract people from far and wide. Travelers need to book flights (travel services, transportation), hotels (accommodation).
Sporting facilities such as stadiums must accommodate large numbers of people (attractions/events) for the duration of the event. Restaurants, bars and clubs will feed and entertain tourists and athletes.
International competitions also have a huge impact on other businesses including the construction sector (building facilities to house events and accomodation for athletes etc), government-creating infrastructure jobs (road renewal etc).
Medical Conferences
When large groups come together for a single purpose, they attract visitors requiring a variety of services from all sectors of the tourism industry. Travelers need to book flights (travel services, transportation), hotels (accommodation) and of course will need to eat while away from home (food and beverage services). Many will take time to relax and network with colleagues doing activities such as golfing etc. (attractions and entertainment).
